Despite the weather

We overcame the dreadful Easter weather to hold another successful festival of touch rugby and real ale on Good Friday.

Everything was going to plan on Wednesday night when the club's players put the marquees up, but by Thursday afternoon they'd all blown down. Things were looking bleak, but the organisers stayed calm and alternative plans were put in place. Replacement marquees were erected in the car park and a completely different set up was put in place.

All 24 touch rugby teams turned up on time on the day with extra wet and warm weather gear and the great Ringwood public still turned up to watch the colourful spectacle and enjoy the real ale festival.

To their great credit, the organisers and club members turned what could have been a disaster into another triumph.

After the event, the club's chairman Ian Marshall, who is in his first year in post, said "I don't want many more weekends like that, but I'm so impressed at the way the whole club pulled together to make sure the day was still a success". He added, "The profit from this event each year is critical to the club's financial viability and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, club members and the whole Ringwood community for all of their incredible support".

The picture shows Friends Stay United, from the Trojans club in Southampton, who retained their touch rugby title for the second season on the trot. This year, they won the Andrew Galloway Memorial Trophy, which was named in memory of Ellingham member Andrew Galloway, who died suddenly a few weeks ago and who had refereed at every previous Good Friday event over the the last 20 years.
